Have you ever just finished reading a really great book and wished that you could broadcast the recommendation to everyone you know and even to perfect strangers?! Good reads do that to you- stir your hearts, find your inner voice, hold your breath in anticipation and basically makes you pump your fist and say "That was a shiok (Singapore slang for great) read!"

Well, this is a platform for us to share these great experiences with one another! All too often, we read a superb book and do not have the chance to pen down our thoughts and to recommend it to someone else. Do that now, by dropping us an email at bookpicks4all@gmail.com so that we can post it on this blog.

Do, however, bear in mind that kids as well as adults read this blog, so do be discerning in your recommendation, choosing only wholesome and noteworthy reads. Much thanks to all and happy reviewing!

Where the Mountain Meets The Moon- Grace Lin

This is a story about a young girl named Minli who lives in a village that was a shade of faded brown. This was because the land around the village was hard and the villagers, poor. To coax rice out of the stubborn land, the fields had to be flooded with water. The villagers had to tramp in the mud, bending and stooping and planting day after day. Working in the mud so much made it spread everywhere and the hot sun dried it onto their clothes and hair and homes. Over time, everything in the village had become the dull colour of dried mud.

Minli was not dull and sad like the others, she had a bright cheerful face and when people saw her, her face will cheer them up a bit. Minli was curious and couldn't wait to find out about new things. Her name Minli meant quick thinking and it suited her well. "Too well," her mother said. Minli's mother always sighed and Minli couldn't remember one time when Ma, which she called her mother , didn't sigh. Minli loved it when her father told her stories but ma didn't approve of it and said that it was nonsense.

Minli's mother always said she wished for better fortune and Minli wished she could make that come true. This book is made up of the many mythical stories Minli's father read to her. Through the stories, Minli finds herself on an exciting journey as the characters of the stories begin to appear before her!  She sets off on a quest to find the Old Man of the Moon and make a difference in her and her family's lives.

Have an enjoyable time reading!

Sarah
